Sebastian Agency was founded in 1982 in San Francisco by Laurie Harper
Markusen. Her background encompasses business, finance, and publishing, which has served her well in the course
of representing clients from all over the country, selling hundreds of books. She has cultivated long-standing relationships
with writers, editors, and publishers large and small.
In January 2000 Laurie moved the Agency to Minneapolis/St
Paul, where she continues to thrive. Wayzata is on Lake Minnetonka, on the edge of the Twin Cities. This is a
flourishing area for writers and independent publishers; a community with a blessedly high literacy rate and voracious readers.
Laurie does not take on many new authors in any given year, as she represents authors from her established stable,
but she does read and consider each query.
In 2008 Dawn Frederick, former
associate agent of Sebastian Agency, formed her own independent agency, Red Sofa Literary Agency.
