At this stage of the agency, I do not take on many new clients. Most
of my new clients have been by referral. I have to believe strongly in a book I take on, either in terms of
its importance or in the sheer commerciality of the book, and it would normally be in one of the topic areas listed below.
Nonfiction narrative books are most compelling to me, which encompasses a broad spectrum.
I no longer consider first fiction
authors, so please do not query for novels unless you have already had some aspect of your fiction published.
Business & Finance:
MANAGEMENT:
New trends and directions, revelations, emerging technological
shifts, global issues. Note: I am not interested in seeing any
retirement "what I learned in my 30-year management career"
books.
BUSINESS NARRATIVES:
"The Story of..."; "How X Became # 1"; "The Making of X"
These typically come from business journalists following current
and emerging trend stories, which I am often interested in.
FINANCIAL: "Lessons
From..."; "Profiting From....";
"What You Need to Know About...."
I represent Robert Hagstrom and Michael
Mauboussin
so your work should be distinct from their work.
Health/Medicine/Nutrition:
Narratives from the field by professionals--
Neurology, Nursing, ER, Surgeons, Pediatrics, ICU, et al
I represent Cole Giller,MD -- see his PORT IN A STORM--about how
to make major medical decisions and live to tell about it. Leading edge research --emerging fields or breakthroughs
Disease/
immunology / aging
Nutrition Guides of any sort would have to be by an author
with an established marketing platform. I already represent
Elaine Moquette Magee who covers a broad spectrum of
nutrition titles, and Kelly James Enger who writes and co-authors
health and nutrition books.
Women's Issues: These books
can encompass memoirs, essay compilations, personal
growth books, research & studies---across fields like communications, education,
family and relationships, mental health, physical health, work
and careers, aging, spiritual well-being..... I represent Suzanne Caplan -- see her new women's web portal --
www.womenetcetera.com
Psychology/Sociology/Personal Growth: This
area is for professionals writing from their private practices
or client-based work, for the general trade audience, across a broad
arena. For example, see the many books from my author Tina
Tessina,
and from Peggy Vaughan.
